SigEx Telecom : Google brings Internet to the poor...
by Corina Ciubotaru
This month Google is engaging in different sort of activities looking like it doesn't want go get out of the spotlight and proving everyone that Google is still the great giant. Google is engaging in something very big and important- a public-policy battle that could determine the future of Internet Access in America. Starting from mobile operators, going up to public-safety companies and ending with Google, they all see the 700 MHz spectrum as the perfect chance to extend mobile broadband services. Google says it's interested in the 700MHz auction because it wants to make Internet as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. According to Chris Sacca, head of special initiatives at Google, the Internet is still "too expensive for most folks". How is that possible?Countries from the Eastern Europe have Internet access and poor people use it. People from Romania, Bulgaria etc have way smaller incomes than people in America and they have Internet access at home in a very high proportion. But in America, the Internet is still to expensive... I think Google took the wrong attitude in this case, they are the search giant, they are in America they can't act like "Google cares about the poor. Google is the new prince charming that will bring Internet to your homes at very low costs." I honestly don't think this attitude suits Google and I don't know how people will react but people with some brains won't buy it.
