SigEx Telecom : Google pushes for rules to aid wireless plans
by Delia Cruceru
Google wants consumers to have the right to pick services from any carriers they want to, and to have any software they want on their phone. This is the plan that Google has if itâs going to be the winner of the 700 MHz Spectrum auction. The company announced that it âwould bid upward of $4.6 billion for a swath of the nation's airwaves,â but other companies like Verizon Wireless and AT&T are rejecting those conditions. Blair Levin, a former FCC official who is now an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus & Company says: "When you buy a computer, they don't ask what kind of Internet service you have, and the computer can run any application or service. That doesn't exist in the wireless world. That's where Google wants to go with this auction." Google invested millions of dollars in mobile phone research, and rumors say they are going to launch a Google phone, but the company is not willing to make any affirmation about this subject, they only note the importance of consumers choosing the services and the devices that they want. AT&T said about Googleâs proposal: âThis is an attempt to pressure the U.S. government to turn the auction process on its head by ensuring only a few, if any, bidders will compete with Google," Thomas J. Tauke, Verizon's executive vice president of public affairs, policy and communications criticized Google in a statement: "Google's filing urges the FCC to adopt rules that force all bidders to implement Google's business plan--which would reduce the incentives for other players to bid,"
