SigEx Telecom : Google brings Internet to the poor...
by Corina Ciubotaru

This month Google is engaging in different sort of activities looking like it doesn't want go get out of the spotlight and proving everyone that Google is still the great giant. Google is engaging in something very big and important- a public-policy battle that could determine the future of Internet Access in America. Starting from mobile operators, going up to public-safety companies and ending with Google, they all see the 700 MHz spectrum as the perfect chance to extend mobile broadband services. Google says it's interested in the 700MHz auction because it wants to make Internet as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. According to Chris Sacca, head of special initiatives at Google, the Internet is still "too expensive for most folks". How is that possible?Countries from the Eastern Europe have Internet access and poor people use it. People from Romania, Bulgaria etc have way smaller incomes than people in America and they have Internet access at home in a very high proportion. But in America, the Internet is still to expensive... I think Google took the wrong attitude in this case, they are the search giant, they are in America they can't act like "Google cares about the poor. Google is the new prince charming that will bring Internet to your homes at very low costs." I honestly don't think this attitude suits Google and I don't know how people will react but people with some brains won't buy it.

SigEx Telecom : Europe and US will soon communicate
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Sometimes I am just overwhelmed of all the things that are happening. Everything is happening so fast, innovations are appearing like mushrooms after a good rain, technology is just amazing. I feel wordless every day when I find out new things from all around the world. We're evolving with the speed of light but who knows in what direction. Nature has gone crazy and we keep inventing and inventing. I am going to talk about Galileo and GPS sharing signals but I made this introduction because I wonder where everything is going, what is the purpose of all this rush, and all these wonderful things being created. Since 2004 a joint compatibility and interoperability working group has been working to design a signal system that can allow Europe's Galileo to meet the GPS satellites run by the USA In the close future signals from their satellite navigation systems will be picked up on the same receiver. Globalization isn't just a myth than and users worldwide are supposed to be benefiting soon from the friendship and closeness between the signals of EU and US. Galileo is due to become fully operational in 2012 but perhaps this agreement will "facilitate the rapid acceptance of Galileo in global markets side by side with GPS"(Matthias Ruete, EC general director) So...let's applaud the fact that Europe and USA will finally communicate.

SigEx Telecom : FCC Spectrum Auction: What's Google on About?
by Delia Cruceru

Google’s plans to change the rules for the 700MHz spectrum auction are very hard to be accepted by other companies that participate to this auction. If they are going to win the nation’s airwaves, Google wants open acces and wholesale resale, anf for that they will invest in the auction $4.6 billion. Google "requested that the Commission should extend to all CMRS-type spectrum licensees clearly delineated, explicitly enforceable, and unwavering obligations to provide (1) open applications, (2) open devices, (3) open wholesale services, and (4) open network access." Former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale and former FCC commissioner Reed Hundt support Google’s bold ideas about the rules for the auction AT&T agrees with the open acces part, but they don’t accept the wholesale resale. Verizon instead is threatening that if this happens, they would take they’re money and leave the auction. The federal commission doesn’t afford that, the auction is estimated that it would bring $20 billion to $50 billion into the federal treasury. Specialists say that the open access will bring a competitive stimulus but the wholesale resale is anticompetitive and would dictate how companies must package their services, and that mobile carriers will unite in this battle against Google and they would spend whatever is takes to win the auction.

Bye, bye cables
by Claudia Sonea

From optical mouse and keyboard we will soon move forward to Wireless USB. This is one thing that will definitely improve the work with the computer's peripherals like scanner, printers and other portable hard drives. The project is initiated by USB Implementers Forum Inc. (USB-IF), a nonprofit organisation. Certified Wireless USB kits from D-Link Systems Inc. and Iogear Inc wirelessly communicates with a hub that holds multiple wired USB devices, being among the first peripherals released in July based on the Wireless USB. Lenovo and Dell have already introduced Wireless USB chips in the Inspiron 1720 and ThinkPad T61that can communicate with their devices in a 10 meter range and the speed increases smaller the distance gets. It should help the consumers to transfer data, audio and avi files more efficiently. There is only the beginning, better ways of associating a device to a host will be researched and also the main goal of everyone will be to make users more happy and content of their devices. Of course this means more money and new devices, but according to them you must have it. If you don't you will be left outside the circle and you will spend more time than others and you know the saying: time means money. What you get with one hand you have to give with the other. Innovation, innovation, it's so hard to acquire everything you need and want. Press click and say goodbye to those darn cables. Go Wireless USB, go!

Good news everyone! The WiFi Navigator will be available soon for Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone Edition). The Golden WiFi Navigator for Symbian is available for the customers on the Golden WiFi website. Golden Telecom has licensed Spotigo's wireless client for Symbian and contracted Spotigo for corresponding services. Daniel Prümers, Managing Director of Spotigo said that Golden Telecom did a good job comparing and evaluating all wireless client platforms on the market and that he is very proud they have selected Spotigo. I'm sure we all know something about Golden Telecom, Inc, but is it my duty to say it is a leading provider of integrated telecommunications and Internet services throught Russia and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Spotigo started everything in 2005 and is now one of the leading European software- and services company to provide innovative technology to mobile broadband operators. Perhaps that was why in 2006 the High-Tech Gründerfonds chose to invest in Spotigo. You can find out more about Spotigo on http://www.spotigo.com, and we will all find out more about this agreement between Golden Telecom and Spotigo soon because it announces to be very very big.

SigEx Telecom : Nokia targets content sharing with Twango buy
by Delia Cruceru

The Internet media sharing site Twango was purchased by Finland’s mobile giant Nokia for a price, rumors say less than $100 million. Twango is a company from Redmond Washington, and it was founded by former Microsoft employees, and it developed a platform for organizing, sharing and publishing videos and photos using phones or computers. "The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our vision of seamless access to information, entertainment and social networks at anytime from any connected device in any way you choose," said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager of multimedia at Nokia. "When you combine a Nokia Nseries multimedia computer with a rich media sharing destination like Twango, people will have exciting new ways to create and enjoy rich media experiences in real time." It’s not the first acquisition Nokia made, they also bought a Seattle based company named Loudeye, an online audio provider and the German company Gate5 that developed mapping, routing and navigation software, which the mobile giant uses for its phones. A senior analyst from Canalys, Pete Cunningham, said that this acquisition for Nokia will bring good results, having a web 2.0 service site, similar to Facebook or MySpace, bringing them significantly improve average revenue per user.

SigEx Telecom :CE Products Wins Wireless USB Certification
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

The group said that the first wave of consumer electronics devices have based on Wireless USB 1.0 Certification Program fact that will help WUSB products join or even compete with ultra wideband technologies and the wireless high-definition interface . These products that are certified will be compatible with upcoming certified WUSB gear, according to the USB-IF, the industry organization responsible for overseeing USB standards. According to the Implementers Forum the later devices will hit stores back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons. Vital as the electronics industry will be the deployment of end-user products like D-Link's Wireless USB hub and adapter, said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president. The products will deliver the benefits of strict certification process and allow consumers to keep the investments they`ve made in their PC`s and devices. Already, vendors such as Alereon, Intel, NEC, Realtek, and WiQuest have started producing certified wireless USB silicon. Wireless USB is basically Intel's version of ultrawideband (UWB) technology, which works to translate the signals of a standard USB connection and deliver them over a wireless radio. However, as an application-specific form of ultrawideband, WUSB is largely led by Intel and its partners, all of which are hoping to use it as a replacement for wired USB connections in the future.

SigEx Telecom : CE Products castiga certificarea USB
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

SigEx Telecom : Google pushes for rules to aid wireless plans
by Delia Cruceru

Google wants consumers to have the right to pick services from any carriers they want to, and to have any software they want on their phone. This is the plan that Google has if it’s going to be the winner of the 700 MHz Spectrum auction. The company announced that it “would bid upward of $4.6 billion for a swath of the nation's airwaves,” but other companies like Verizon Wireless and AT&T are rejecting those conditions. Blair Levin, a former FCC official who is now an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus & Company says: "When you buy a computer, they don't ask what kind of Internet service you have, and the computer can run any application or service. That doesn't exist in the wireless world. That's where Google wants to go with this auction." Google invested millions of dollars in mobile phone research, and rumors say they are going to launch a Google phone, but the company is not willing to make any affirmation about this subject, they only note the importance of consumers choosing the services and the devices that they want. AT&T said about Google’s proposal: “This is an attempt to pressure the U.S. government to turn the auction process on its head by ensuring only a few, if any, bidders will compete with Google," Thomas J. Tauke, Verizon's executive vice president of public affairs, policy and communications criticized Google in a statement: "Google's filing urges the FCC to adopt rules that force all bidders to implement Google's business plan--which would reduce the incentives for other players to bid,"
