by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Oamenii spun si am vazut pe pielea mea ca in Europa daca faci patru intoarceri la dreapta esti complet pierdut, pe cand in New York sau in alte orase americane vei ajunge in acelasi loc.

Sprint will invest $2.5 billion by the end of next year in WiMAX
by Corina Ciubotaru

Data connections have reached 4G with the advent of WiMAX, the network that has a broader range than wireless at speeds five times higher. Sprint Nextel is one of the companies that want a piece of the WiMAX action and is planning to spend $2.5 billion by 2011 to develop it. The first cities boasting coverage from Sprint and its associate, Clearwire Corp. by the fourth quarter of 2007, are Washington, Baltimore and Chicago. WiMAX isn't expected to interfere with Sprint's EVDO service, but it's intended to work both on laptops and on mobile phones. XOHM (pronounced "zoam") is the name of the new service, which is expected to have 100 million users by the end of 2008. It will most likely bring profits between $2 billion and $2.5 billion starting in 2010, the year when developers hope the users count will reach 125 million. Besides Clearwire, Sprint Nextel has also signed agreements with Nokia, Samsung and Motorola to develop WiMAX compatible services, and with Google. The devices using this latest technology will benefit from a Web portal designed especially for them by the smart folks at Google.Right now, DSL cable connections have the highest speeds but technology is evolving fast and soon, there will come a time when the Internet will be all around us, broadcasted wirelessly from specific locations using protocols similar to WiMAX. The world will be different then and it's up to each of us to prepare for it and embrace the advances that come along with it.

TomTom acquires Tele Atlas
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

The Dutch navigation system, TomTom announced on Monday that it intends to acquire it's main digital map dealer Tele Atlas for two billion euros.TomTom is the world's largest maker of car navigation devices and for Tele Atlas this deal will mean more market share in the US.People say and I've seen it for myself, that if in Europe you make 3-4 right turns you are totally lost, while in New York or other American cities you are in the same spot.Marina Wyatt, financial executive at TomTom, declared an offer of 21,25 euro for each Tele Atlas stock, will be launched soon. The acquisition will ve financed by contracting credits but also cash.Tele Atlas offers maps and data for several digital cartography sites, including Google and Mapquest, and also produces navigation systems for some telephone producers, like Nokia for example. The chief executive at TomTom, Harold Goddijn, said that Tele Atlas will continue to offer maps for the TomTom navigation systems and for the other clients to.The navigation systems producer obtained in the second trimester a net profit of 68 million euros, compared to 38 million euros obtained in the same period an year before.TomTom sales have grown with 37 percent, up to 380 million euros.I think we will soon see TomTom and Tele Atlas taking over the US market because these are the kind of companies very attentive with details and customers, that personalize their services, offer quality services and know what success needs and means.

Chris Cantell Discusses Wireless: Wireless auction
by Lenka Lehenova

Wireless...we know this term and we use it quite often. But what does it mean exactly? Ok, I am not specialist for these things and i am not very technical kind of person so I can't to perfect explain it like some professional. So I will say it in my own way. We can use wireless for transport some information or any type of electrical or electronic operation without the use of wires. It is really useful and today we can meet with it almost everywhere although we don't know that it is wireless communication. GPS & Global position system, garage doors openers, computer mice, keyboards, satellite television or telephones are only couple of examples of wireless technology. Wireless auction just proceed in Washington. It is the fifth day of the U.S. government auction looking for 700-megahertz airwaves. In the first round on Wednesday there was a bidding on a one piece of airwaves called the "C" block reached 4.29 billion dollars. This price is near the minimum price which was set by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) & 4.7 billion dollars. On the fifth day of the auction, the bidding topped is 11.57 billion dollars. 700-megahertz!and? What does it mean? Why is it so wanted? The blocks with signals of this size are valuable and high quality because you can catch signal even if there are long distance or thick walls. There are also blocks "A", "B", "D" and the final, less useful block "E", which is limited to one way data transmission. There are companies like AT&T, Verizon Wireless and possible competitors like Internet company Google, EchoStar, Communications and Cablevision Systems qualified to bid.
